My BFF, Jen, and I met on the first day of kindergarten for our eldest sons, Henri and Jonathan, 20 years ago. We’ve been at each other’s sides ever since. Jen is a native Minnesotan and has been my guide to all the local traditions, hot spots, and Hotdish.
Early on in our friendship, she invited me to her cabin on a lake in the bucolic forests of northern Minnesota, where our five boys ran wild and she tried to teach me how to fish for muskie. As the years passed and our friendship deepened, she eventually shared her closely held secret blueberry patch with me. We drove along winding dirt roads, for what felt like hours, and ended up on a hill, covered like a blue blanket, in perfectly ripe, wild blueberries. The boys, little pails in hand, ran around picking berries. Each of them was covered in blueberry juice and their pails completely empty. Jen and I managed to fill ours and happily returned to the cabin to make blueberry pancakes for the kids and a blueberry galette for us moms. It was the perfect day, reminiscent of Blueberries for Sal, my favorite children’s book, sans the bears.
Decades later, Jen and I visited her new secret blueberry patch, this time just the two of us. Our boys are off being grown young men and we moms are still adventuring together and hoping the bears don’t interrupt our perfect picnic in the blueberry patch.
You’ll get your fill of blueberries tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT/1 p.m. ET on Magnolia Network! Watch me make the treats below, and join me for a trip to find some fresh berries with Jen! Stream all three seasons on discovery+ and Max.
Blueberry Bars
These blueberry bars are one of the oldest recipes on my site! They are a wonderful treat I made when my boys were little (and they still love to this day!). It’s a simple recipe perfect for snack time, and the lattice crust gives a hint of elegance for special occasions. It was a blast to make them on an episode of Zoë Bakes!
Blueberry Scones
These blueberry scones were the tasty snack on my road trip to the cabin with my best friend, Jen! They’re flaky, fluffy, and packed full of berries, which makes for a wonderful breakfast treat or snack.

Giveaway Time!
I get asked all the time where my necklaces are from and I am so proud to share that my super-talented mom makes them and sells them in her Etsy shop called Silk Oak Designs! She designed this one with aqua-blue glass beads on dark-gold leather for me and calls it her “Zoë” necklace. I wear it wrapped three times, like a choker but you can also wear it in one long strand or doubled, see her Etsy shop and her instagram @silkoakdesigns for more details on how to style them. This week I’m so excited to give away a “Zoë” necklace to TWO lucky winners. To enter to win, all you need to do is be signed up for this newsletter! (USA residents only). We’ll draw a winner and contact them on Friday, Aug. 25. Be sure to check your e-mail that day to see if you won! If we don’t hear back within 48 hours we will select a new winner.
Thanks for sharing the love, Mom! xo
I love your story of how you meet your dear friend. I too meet my best friend the first day of kindergarten! We had so much fun thru the years. A best life long friend is truly sent from above to cherish. I lost my best friend to cancer a few years ago. A lot of plans as we grew older are on hold until someday.
I really enjoy you cooking shows and the people from around your town. I have always agreed “Dessert First!” Can’t wait for your next show.
Stay on the Sweet Side Zoe’
